What does “cut-through” identification mean?
Cut-through identification means the characters are open shapes passing through the entire thickness of the tag or plate. There is no ink layer, printed label or shallow surface engraving forming the primary text. The opening itself is the identifier.
This creates a practical advantage in industrial environments: buildup may cover the surface, but it does not erase the physical geometry. Operators can brush, blow or wash material from the openings, use the background behind the plate to create contrast, or identify larger characters by touch when the application permits.

Cut-through tags are especially useful where surface markings are repeatedly hidden by dust, overspray, residue or industrial buildup. The tag does not become magically maintenance-free, but the identification remains physically present through the full metal thickness.

Bulk-material facilities may have dozens or hundreds of air cannons operating across bins, silos, chutes and transfer points. Cut-through tags provide durable field identification for mapping each air cannon and its control solenoid or control box to the identifier recognized by the control room.

Cut-through characters are especially useful around cement, aggregate, mining, grain and other bulk-material systems where dust and fines can obscure surface-only markings. The openings preserve the physical character shape and can often be cleared, seen by contrast or felt more easily, although packed material can still affect readability.

Cut-through weld tags that can be painted with the equipment
A cut-through weld tag can be attached to fabricated equipment before coating or final paint. Because the text is an opening rather than a printed mark, the plate and equipment may be painted as one assembly while the character shapes remain physically defined. Background shadow or a contrasting surface behind the openings can make the identification visible.
Coating thickness and application still matter. Heavy paint, powder coating or accumulated material can bridge or fill small openings. Larger lettering, wider bridges and adequate open space improve the result. Send the coating process and desired text so we can recommend a test piece before full production.

Metals and thicknesses
Available constructions depend on the character design, plate dimensions, mounting method and environment. Potential options include:
- 18-gauge cold-rolled steel for weld-on and paint-over applications
- 20-gauge 304 stainless steel for standard cut-through tags
- 16-gauge stainless steel for increased rigidity
- 1/16-inch 304 or 316 stainless steel
- 1/8-inch (.125-inch) 304 or 316 stainless steel for extra-heavy plates
- .040-inch aluminum for compatible lightweight applications
- Standard, brushed or application-specific finishes where available
Material selection should consider corrosion exposure, attachment method, electrical considerations, cleaning chemicals, coating process and the strength of the remaining character bridges.
How small can cut-through lettering be?
We have successfully produced lettering approximately .5 inch tall through .125-inch-thick 316 stainless steel on compatible layouts. That is a demonstrated manufacturing capability, not a universal minimum for every font, word or plate.
Letters such as A, B, D, O, P, Q, R, 0, 6, 8 and 9 require stencil bridges to retain their centers. Longer text needs either a larger plate, smaller characters or multiple lines. Material thickness, font, bridge width, kerf, spacing and mounting all affect feasibility.

Frequently asked questions
Will cut-through metal tags stay readable when covered in dust?
The character openings remain physically present even when the surface is dusty. Visibility depends on buildup depth, lighting, background contrast and whether the openings have become packed, but the identifier can usually be cleared more directly than a surface-only mark.
Can a cut-through weld tag be painted?
Yes. The tag can be welded to compatible equipment and painted with the assembly. The openings can continue to define the text, although heavy coating can bridge or fill small characters. A test piece is recommended for thick paint or powder coating.
Can you cut words as well as numbers?
Yes. Words, abbreviations and alphanumeric identifiers are possible when the plate is large enough and the characters can be bridged safely.
Can every tag have a different number?
Yes. We manufacture sequential ranges and fully variable lists from customer-approved spreadsheets.
Can you make custom shapes and mounting holes?
Yes. Round, square, hexagon, rectangular and custom-cut formats can be quoted with holes, slots, weld areas or other customer-specified geometry.
Is .5-inch lettering always possible in 1/8-inch stainless?
No. We have achieved approximately .5-inch-tall letters in .125-inch 316 stainless, but feasibility depends on the characters, font, spacing, bridge design and overall plate geometry.
Need identification that does not disappear with the surface?
Send the wording, application, material, approximate size and quantity. We will review the layout and recommend either cut-through identification, surface engraving or a combination of both.
Application note: Cut-through construction preserves the physical character geometry, but readability can still be affected by packed material, coating that bridges the openings, inadequate contrast, small character size, lighting and viewing distance. Final material, dimensions, attachment and layout should be approved for the actual application.
